Daniel (Decatur) Emmett ( 1815 -- 1904 )

Composer; born in Mount Vernon, Ohio. A pioneering member of blackface comedy troops (1842--98), he composed songs for minstrel shows, including "Dixie," (1859) which became the Southern anthem.
