Carlisle Floyd ( 1926 -- )

Opera composer; born in Latta, S.C. Teaching at Florida State from 1947, he had a nationwide success with his third opera, Susannah (1955). He continued to compose operas, all marked by directness of style and a strong nationalistic element.
