Dame Clara Butt ( 1872 -- 1936 )

Contralto singer, born in Southwick, West Sussex, S England, UK. She made her debut in 1892, and became known for her performances in oratorios. She was made a dame in 1920. Elgar's Sea Pictures were especially composed for her.
