Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau ( 1925 -- )

Baritone, born in Berlin. He studied made his professional debut at Freiburg in 1947, and joined the Berlin Municipal Opera as a principal baritone. He became one of the foremost interpreters of German Lieder, particularly the song-cycles of Schubert, and has also appeared in a wide range of operatic roles. He performed in the premier of Britten's A War Requiem in 1962, as well as in the Songs and Proverbs of William Blake (1965) which Britten had composed for him. He has also written several books on music.
