Conductor, born in Amsterdam. He studied at the Amsterdam Conservatory, and was an orchestral violinist before becoming second conductor of The Netherlands Radio Union (1955). He was later conductor of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra (from 1961) and of the London Philharmonic (1967--79), and was appointed musical director at Glyndebourne in 1977 (the year he was granted an honorary knighthood) and at Covent Garden in 1987. |
