(Märta) Birgit Nilsson ( 1922 -- )

Operatic soprano, born in Karup, Sweden. She studied at the Stockholm Royal Academy of Music. Following her debut in 1946, she sang with the Stockholm Royal Opera (1947--51), and at Bayreuth Festivals (1953--70). She was the leading Wagnerian soprano of that period, having a voice of exceptional power, stamina, and intense personality. She sang at most of the great houses and festivals of the world, and her repertoire included Verdi, Puccini, and Strauss. She retired from the stage in 1982.
