Composer, born in London, England, UK. He studied in London and Leipzig, and became an organist in London. His association with the theatre started in 1867, and from 1871 he was known for his collaboration with W S Gilbert in such comic operas as HMS Pinafore (1878) and The Pirates of Penzance (1879). He also composed a grand opera, Ivanhoe (1891), cantatas, ballads, a Te Deum, and hymn tunes. He was knighted in 1883. |
