Musicologist, born in Vienna. He emigrated to England in 1938, and followed a career in musical journalism and analytical criticism. He co-founded the magazine Music Survey, wrote for many other journals, served on the BBC staff from 1959, and broadcast frequently. He was influentially erudite upon contemporary music, chamber music, and football.
