Béla Bartók ( 1881 -- 1945 )

Composer, born in Nagyszentmiklós, Hungary. He studied in Pressburg and at the Budapest Academy of Music, then toured widely as a pianist. He first collected folksongs in 1904, discovering a treasury of national material, which he recorded and classified. From 1907 he was professor of piano at the Budapest Academy, a post relinquished only in 1934 in order to devote more time to ethnomusicological research. He left Hungary in 1939, and settled in the USA. His works include the opera Duke Bluebeard's Castle, the ballets The Wooden Prince and The Miraculous Mandarin, two violin and three piano concertos, orchestral music including the Concerto for Orchestra, chamber music including six string quartets, works for violin and piano, songs, choruses, and folksong arrangements.
