Indian singer. She became a singer as a child to help support her family when her father died. In 1948 she was engaged to provide the singing voice of actresses in Indian musical films, and had made over 30`000 recordings for more than 2000 films by the time she retired in 1984. She made several visits to London in the 1980s, performing to sell-out audiences in Wembley Stadium.
