Composer; born in Portland, Maine. After training in Germany (1857--61), he returned to assume, at Harvard, the first chair of music in an American university (1862--1905). One of the "Boston Classic" school, he composed high-toned music in a European style, such as his Symphony No. 2 (1880). |
