Composer, born in Pamiers, France. He became organist (1896) at La Madeleine, Paris, and director of the Conservatoire (1905--20). Though chiefly remembered for his songs, including the evergreen Après un rêve (c.1865), he also wrote operas and orchestral pieces, such as Masques et bergamasques (1919), and a much-performed Requiem (1887--90). |
