Louis Joseph Papineau ( 1786 -- 1871 )

French-Canadian leader, born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He was speaker of the House of Assembly for Lower Canada (1815--37), opposed the union with Upper Canada, and agitated against the imperial government. At the rebellion of 1837 a warrant was issued against him for high treason. He escaped to Paris, but returned to Canada after the general amnesty of 1844.
