Astrid Varnay ( 1918 -- )

Soprano, born in Stockholm, Sweden. Brought to the USA in childhood, she studied first with her mother. She made her first Metropolitan Opera appearance (in Die Walküre) in 1941 and her last in 1974. She was admired internationally, especially for her Wagnerian roles.
