Xaver Scharwenka ( 1850 -- 1924 )

Pianist and composer, born near Posen, Germany. In 1881 he started a music school in Berlin, and spent the years 1891--98 in New York City directing the Scharwenka Music School. He composed symphonies, piano concertos, and Polish dances.
