(Giuseppe) Domenico Scarlatti ( 1685 -- 1757 )

Composer, born in Naples, Italy, the son of Alessandro Scarlatti. From 1711 he was maestro di cappella in Rome to the Queen of Poland, for whom he composed several operas, and he also served in Lisbon and Madrid. As choirmaster of St Peter's, Rome (1714--19), he wrote much church music. He was a skilled harpsichordist, and is mainly remembered for the 555 sonatas written for this instrument.
