Composer and musicologist, born in Vienna. He studied under Schoenberg, and became professor of musical history at Vienna (1930--8). Exiled from Austria by the Nazis, he became a research fellow then lecturer and reader in music (1944--56) at Oxford. His works include six operas, nine symphonies, and much choral and chamber music. |
