Peter Gabriel ( 1950 -- )
Rock singer, born February 13, 1950, in Surrey, England, to Irene and Ralph. His mother was a concert pianist who insisted that Gabriel take piano lessons as a youngster. As a teenager, Gabriel met Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford in high school and formed bands called Garden Wall and The New Anon.
When Gabriel was 17, the group signed a deal with Decca Records and changed their name to Genesis. Their first record, From Genesis to Revelations, was released in 1969 to only moderate success.
On March 17, 1971, Gabriel married Jill Moore and the couple had two daughters, Anna (1974) and Melanie (1976). During this time, Genesis became more popular from albums such as Selling England By the Pound (1973) and the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (1974). Gabriel split from the band, which now included Phil Collins, and released a well-regarded self-titled solo record in 1977.
Gabriel's marriage was on shaky ground throughout the 1980s. Gabriel began a friendship with actress Rosanna Arquette that later blossomed into a love affair. Meanwhile, Gabriel's wife had an affair with his producer and the couple separated in 1987. However, it was at this time that Gabriel was enjoying his greatest success as an artist. His mix of electronics and world music into art rock became a phenomenon with “Sledgehammer” from the 1986 album So. The single had a cutting edge video that broke Gabriel into the mainstream. A collection of video hits was released as CV (1988), topped the UK music video chart.
Gabriel has been politically active, using his music to promote Amnesty International and Greenpeace. His song “Biko,” about South African Stephen Biko brought attention to the struggle against Apartheid. Following his massive success with So, Gabriel recorded the score and soundtrack to Martin Scorsese's Last Temptation of Christ and then finally produced a follow-up studio album in 1992 with Us.
Gabriel broke up with Arquette in 1992. Reportedly, Sinead O'Connor and Gabriel had a brief relationship when O'Connor joined his traveling WOMAD (World of Music, Arts and Dance) festival. Gabriel finally wed longtime companion Meah Flynn in June 2002.
More recently, Gabriel has been trying to develop multimedia projects that take advantage of the latest technological advances.
