Giulio Caccini ( 1550 -- 1618 )

Composer and singer, born in Rome. With Jacopo Peri he paved the way for opera by setting to music the drama Euridice (1602). Particularly significant was his Nuove musiche (1602), a collection of canzonets and madrigals.
