Beveridge Webster ( 1908 -- 1999 )

Pianist. Born May 13, 1908, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Webster began his study of music with his father, also named Beveridge Webster, who was the founding director of the Pittsburgh Conservatory. He studied with renowned teachers in Paris and Berlin and toured Europe as a soloist in the late 1920s and early 1930s, before his 1934 American debut with the New York Philharmonic. Webster became especially well-known for his graceful interpretations of Ravel and Debussy; in 1968, he gave the first-ever complete performance of Debussy's works in New York, and in 1975 he performed all of Ravel's works at a centennial celebration of the composer's birth held at Juilliard. In addition to his busy concert schedule--he performed both classical and contemporary works with a number of major American orchestras--Webster taught at the New England Conservatory from 1940 to 1946 and at New York's Juilliard School of Music from 1946 to 1990.
